Inspirations

As a young artist in Saxony, one of Germany's Eastern states, Regine's work is influenced by the creative tension between the breathtaking natural beauty of the border region between Germany and the Czech republic and the trendy, innovative and young spirit of a new beginning after the fall of the Berlin wall.

On the one hand, Regine's home town Dresden, a picturesque Baroque-style city between Prague and Berlin, features one of the world's best collections of Renaissance and Baroque art, as well as famous 19th century and modern paintings, among them works by Caspar David Friedrich and Ludwig Richter. Members of the German school of Romantic landscape painting, these two painters contrasted the grandiose beauty, tranquillity and peace of nature and with the insignificance of the individual.

On the other hand, Saxon's biggest city Leipzig is considered one of the most trendy places in Germany today - the "New Berlin". Some of the most famous contemporary painters are connected to Saxony. Neo Rauch, a famous contemporary surrealist, lives in the Leipzig area. Gerhard Richter, one of the world's most appreciated living painters, was born in Dresden. Georg Baselitz and A.R. Penck are from the Dresden region, too.

Today, Saxony has a vibrant, trendy, yet very authentic arts scene, firmly routed in traditional artistic craftsmanship. Also in Regine's works this creative tension can be discovered. She is part of the young East German arts scene, but also studied arts in Dresden and worked a few years as a freelancer at the city's modern art gallery “Neue Meister” that displays both romantic and contemporary art.

Obviously, her work is deeply influenced by her intensive contact to both styles. Her paintings always reflect her intense perception of a natural setting, its characteristic colours and minute detail. Regine's work does not need spectacular landscapes. She is able to discover and reflect the beauty in settings that one might walk by and consider 'normal', not paying much attention. Regine discovers the hidden, intimate spots of beauty. But it is not only natural beauty that is reflected in Regine's work. Regine always adds a twist, an additional stroke of colour or a geometrical pattern that breaks the naturalistic scene and connects it to a specific artistic tradition.
